The Civil War 1861-1865
Field artillery was used extensively to soften an objective for the infantry. Actually, it frightened and demorailized (should be demoralized) more men than it killed or wounded. Only 20% of battle casualties can be attributed to the artillery. Shown here, in an artillery demonstration, is a six-horse team pulling a field cannon and limber. (I believe 'limber' is the wheeled card that carries the cannon it has a box built on it to hold the balls the cannon fires)
