The sender writes that they went fishing on this lake and caught 2 pound crappies. (The average weight of a crappy is 1/2 pound... so either he was exaggerating, or they caught some big ones!) 

This postcard was postmarked in 1946.

 

The Jackalope and When To Milk It ...

The Jackalope

A native of the Western United States, the Jackalope is seldom if ever seen due to its intensive nature and lightning quick speed.  It can only be hunted legally on the 31st day of June between sunrise and sunset.  A permit must be obtained from your local AA.  This fatty beast often mimics noises especially the voice of an intoxicated human.  Legend has it that drinking Jackalope milk can drastically improve ones eyesight.  The best time to milk a Jackalpe is after midnight, as it sleeps on its back, belly shining in the moonlight.

This Curteich postcard was postmarked in 1940.  I love that the sender wrote in the word 'heaven' on the poem.  

A Jackalope

The Western Jackalope

Among the rarest hunter's trophies is the timid Jackalope.  The nocturnal antlered, long-eared mammal has keen senses of both hearing and smell and is said to be attracted to alcohol.  To lure this fine, 4-point, male specimen within range of his camera the photographer used a blend of bourbon, beer, and baloney.

You have to tire them out before landing them.

This is postmarked (to me!) in 1969 from my grandpa (I was 4).  
He writes, "How are you? This fish got away from me. Maybe I will get him another day."  He goes on to tell me the snow is up to my waist where he is.

Jackalopes

The Fabulous Jackalope of North America
This picture was shot with telephoto lens just as they were startled by the cameraman's presence.  Jackalopes are the rarest animals in north America.  A cross between a new extinct small deer and a species of rabbit, they are extremely shy and wild.  They possess the ability to mimic and their cries often sound human and tuneful.  Probably from hearing cowboy songs on lonely nite watch.  None have ever been captured alive and this is a rare photo taken at their feeding grounds in the high country.

The Alligator is a native of the Florida Everglades.  For some time its skin has been fashionably used in the manufacture of bags, shoes, etc., and with this increasing use they had been hunted until they ere almost extinct.  To remedy this situation and supply the demand, several thriving Alligator farms are now in operation, where the breeding and care of alligators is the main industry.

Yeah it's a pretty good fish - kinda average.  As you remember, however, we used fish like this for bait in Lake St. Clair -

This 14 pound beauty was hauled out near Long’s Jetty by a local sportsman who battled her for over an hour before he could pull her in.  “A darn mean fighter,” he reported, “but them fleas is the worst part.” You can see the famed Narrows basscat at:
