Manatees typically breed once every two years; generally only a single calf is born. Gestation lasts about 12 months and a further 12 to 18 months to wean the calf.

The manatee, or sea cow, was once abundant in Florida coastal waters, but now only about 1,000 remain.  These gentlest of all animals once hunted to near extinction are now protected from hunters but face a new enemy - the cutting blades of powercraft that ply Florida waterways.  As vegetarians with healthy appetites, they help control the growth of water plants that clog Florida's waterways.  Boater, please obey the signs on the waterways about the mantes.

Florida's Gentle Giants

The West Indian Manatee, of which there are an estimated 3,000 in the United States, is protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.  Manatees average 10 feet in length, weigh 1,000 lbs. and are herbivorous.  Their closest relative is the elephant, they produce a single calf every 2-5 years after a 13 month gestation period and manatee mothers nurse their young for up to 2 years.
