Zion National Park
One of the most majestic creatures of the North American deserts, and one of the rarest, is the Dessert Bighorn Sheep. Bighorn sheep are sometimes called a "wilderness species" because they require some of the most remote and protected areas in the West. The desert bighorn are a symbol of Zion's wilderness. This species disappeared from the park in the 1950's, and through an intensive reintroduction program the herd was re-established by introducing 12 individuals in the 1970's. The Zion herd now includes over 150 individuals.
