Early settlers of the Louisiana area admired the pelican's generous and nurturing attitude towards its young and adopted the pelican as a symbol of their state. In 1966 the designation was changed to the Brown Pelican. The Brown Pelican is the only dark pelican and the only one limited strictly to coastal regions. Louisiana's nickname is The Pelican State.
