White-Tailed Deer (Odocoilleus virginianus)
Today, the white-tailed deer is the most widespread deer in the world. They prefer forests of conifers which keep their leaves year round and provide them with good cover, even in the winter. The distinctive tail which is brown on top and white underneath is used to signal danger. When a deer perceives danger, it raises its tail straight up in the air. This behavior is called "flagging".
